Enter the tiles on your rack and the finder lists every legal word you can build, scored and sorted with the highest-value plays at the top. It reads from a dictionary of 281,649 words, so obscure but valid plays surface right alongside the everyday ones. Type a ? or * for a blank tile and it becomes any letter — handy for finding a bingo, though the blank itself always scores zero.
North American clubs and tournaments use the NWL word list; most of the rest of the world plays Collins. Collins is larger and accepts words NWL does not (think QI and ZO). Use the Dictionary menu to match the list your game uses, so you never lay a word a challenge could remove. When in doubt, check it against our word lists first.
The number beside each word is the sum of its official tile values — nothing more. On the board, premium squares change everything: a double- or triple-letter square multiplies a single tile, while a double- or triple-word square multiplies the whole play. Plan your placement so a high-value tile like Q, Z, X or J lands on a bonus, and remember the extra 50-point bonus for using all seven tiles.
Short words win games. The two-letter list is the backbone of tight boards — it lets you hook onto existing tiles and open or block lanes. At the other end, a bingo (all seven tiles at once) earns that 50-point bonus, so it is worth scanning the seven- and eight-letter results even when a quick play tempts you. Set an exact length in the filters to jump straight to the words you need.
Use the Pattern tab when you are playing off a letter already on the board: lock the known squares and fill the gaps with ?. If you just want to see what a pile of letters can make, the word unscrambler shows every word regardless of game. Playing the other big tile game?
